Following trends too closely can make your space feel dated and disconnected from your personal style, which can quickly fall out of favor. Instead, focus on timeless pieces that really suit you to create a space you love, which can ultimately save you money on an annual renewal. Outdated (and Overrated) Furniture Trends Retiring in 2025:

Wayfair
Dark espresso wood
I'm not sure this could ever be considered good design, but espresso-colored veneer was ubiquitous just a few years ago. Heavy, dark surfaces tend to make rooms feel gloomy and, frankly, cheap. Instead, opt for natural, solid woods like white oak or walnut. Although they may be more expensive upfront, their durability and timelessness make them a wise investment for life.

Wayfair
Matchy Matchy Furniture Sets
This room is terrifying in many ways. Rooms lack personality when everything fits together perfectly, but even that traditional furniture with rolled armrests and decorative nailheads feels a little strangling. Instead, choose sophisticated styles, from sleek curves to classic and modern silhouettes, paired with vintage pieces for a layered, vibrant look.

The color gray
It had its heyday, but gray needs to go in 2025. It was just so over the top. Admittedly, I still have a gray sofa from West Elm that is now 10 years old and will be sold in 2025. Instead I will look for earthy, natural and warm colors to replace it.

Metal beds
Metal bed frames can feel cold and austere, even though you want your bedroom to be warm and cozy. They also do not encourage good feng shui, as the energy is believed to flow through metal too quickly, creating a feeling of restlessness or increased activity. Not something you want in your bedroom! For a quieter, more grounded sleeping space, a wooden or upholstered bed is a far better choice.

Glamorous French countryside
The charm of the French countryside lies in its simplicity and authenticity – there is nothing overly glamorous. This bed is a little too “extra”. True French country style emphasizes natural woods, organic fibers and timeless, subtle decor.

Mid-century modern
The clean lines and quality of mid-century modern design seem timeless, but homes are becoming cozier, less minimalist, and trending toward curvier shapes and upscale designs.

IKEA
Bulky furniture
Heavy sofas with rolled armrests give way to modular sofas with low seats and sophisticated shapes.

Wayfair
Futons
Sofa beds are becoming more comfortable and stylish, making the dorm room feel of futons a thing of the past.

Bohemian
For those who love this aesthetic, don't worry. Rustic is still popular, but in an upscale way with natural fibers, colors and reclaimed wood in the mix. However, it's time to lose the macrame wall hangings, the eclectic mix of furniture and textiles, and the plants everywhere in rattan pots.

Wayfair
Barn door beds
Barn doors outside of a barn are definitely out, but that tacky farmhouse look definitely needs to go.

Wayfair
Industrial everything
Metal chairs, exposed Edison bulbs, and kitschy steampunk decor are a home decor scene that needs to remain far in the past. Update the look with softer, more organic touches like a wooden farmhouse table and linen-covered chairs.

Deck chairs
Daddy's lazy boy must stay hidden in his man cave or officially disappear. The bulky chairs, while super comfortable, can dominate a room. Instead, look for accent chairs that are still very comfortable but look sleek and modern.

Tuscan cuisines
If you're looking for a first home, you might discover this popular kitchen trend from the early 2000s everywhere. Instead,Upgrade To a modern Mediterranean look with warm neutral tones and natural stone materials.

Wayfair
Tables with glass tops
Glass-topped dining and coffee tables can feel cold and inconvenient (they need constant cleaning!). Instead, choose dining tables made of wood or stone for a sturdier, earthier feel.

Wayfair
Gold hardware
Unpainted brass is trending in kitchens and bathrooms, but this faux gold look reminiscent of '80s brass has to go.

Wayfair
Corduroy upholstery
While corduroy upholstery is affordable, it often ends up looking cheap and outdated. For a more sophisticated and timeless feel, opt for fabrics like wool, velvet or natural linen.

Wayfair
Chevron and overly geometric patterns
Chevron patterns have been on the decline for a few years now, but 2025 is the time to really let them go. Buh-bye!
