Use the third -party rule

As an interior designer, Valerie Darden loves to rely on the third rule to style coffee tables.
“This means dividing the table into three sections and creating a visual triangle of 2 to 3 books, other decorative objects such as a vase with flowers or a stylish tray,” she says.
Mix materials

When choosing objects, pay attention to additional interest and dimension to mix materials. Top a round marble coffee table with green in a clay vase and a strand of decorative wood pearls, or light up a wooden coffee table with metallic accents.
Style with colorful flowers

“I like to add fresh flowers to a coffee table whenever I can,” says Dard. “This gives the room an immediate thrust.”
Use a variety of shapes

Styling a long rectangular coffee table with a round shell to break down straight lines. Use a mixture of shapes on a round, square or organically shaped coffee table to add texture and variation to your display.
Vary the heights of the accessories

“Add to different heights, e.g. two coffee table books and a larger vase next to it,” says Dard. “This creates dimension, interest and beauty.”
Level structure

Create visual interest by transmitting several textures. Mixing materials and shapes when styling your coffee table is particularly important if you design a neutral space.
Stack coffee table books

“I love adding interesting books,” says Dard. “It is an entertaining opportunity for guests not only to see how nicely they are styled, but also open them and try them out.”
Include natural elements

Styling your coffee table with organic shapes and natural elements to create a lively display. A bowl preserved green and a sculptural piece Driftwood will look good in every season and give heat to a contemporary living room.
Consider the color palette

“Think of the books that you put together as a coherent palette,” says interior designer Jessica Nelson. Select books that complement each other or create a fun combination.
Hold on the odd numbers

If you want to include more than three objects in your coffee table design, stick to odd numbers. For a larger table or a maximum aesthetics, styles the surface with five objects for a balanced feeling that is pleasant for the eye.
Make it family -friendly

“Use things that are functional and fun for your family,” says Nelson. “Favorite books, small baskets that contain toys or even a chess board are all great things.”
Use negative space

Do not displace the coffee table in a minimalist living room with too many objects. This table is designed with a small vase made of flowers and vintage candlesticks for a light and airy feeling that leaves enough negative space as well as drinks, books and other ephemera.
Use letters to display

Display -Decor article on letters for a layered look with an additional height. “One of my favorite tips for everywhere in your house – a small plant or flower vase,” says Nelson. “That always increases the space.”
Top an Ottoman with a tray

If your coffee table is an ottoman, make it functional with a round metallic or wooden tray, which imitates its shape. Styling it with crystal canters that are filled with your favorite drink when you are entertaining.
Let a board game out

Encourage family and friends to deal with each other by leaving their favorite board game on the coffee table. This backgammon set serves as a decor on a padded coffee table, while the books of the coffee table are decoratively stacked next to the sofa.
Increase the mood with candles

Candlelight gives your coffee table an ambience and at the same time creates a flattering shine. Depending on the preferences, use a few rejuvenating candles, a fragrant candle or flameless LED candles.
Leave a book open

Leave a popular coffee table book to encourage people to browse. Place it on a stylish book stand for an elegant look.
