Empty clam shells are used by hermit crabs for tiny RVs. Now carpenters in a coastal area of Portugal have apparently taken inspiration from these crustaceans to build an enchanting cabin on wheels.

The Concha – whose name is derived from the Portuguese word for “shell” – is an elegant off-grid home design by Madeiguincho, a carpentry workshop led by Gonçalo Marrote.

Marrote's father and grandfather were also carpenters, and this wealth of experience and generational craftsmanship is evident in the building's stunning workmanship.

The compact cabin is only five meters long, but offers plenty of space in a small space. It has a kitchenette, a shower room with a composting toilet, a living room with plenty of storage space and a loft bed.

Impressive interior design features include the staircase leading to the sleeping area, whose step cavities are complemented with cupboards and drawers. The clean, minimalist aesthetic almost obscures its ingenuity.

It's ready for anyone to start their off-grid lifestyle straight away. According to New Atlas, it has a solar system and battery storage for power, as well as water tanks for fresh and waste water.

Pictures of the cabin parked above on the beach make the property immediately enticing, but this type of home offers a number of additional benefits. For one thing, the price of $63,000 is much cheaper than typical houses or apartments. The money savings don't stop there, as these solar panels generate free electricity, making energy bills a thing of the past.

A tiny home also promotes a clutter-free lifestyle. With less space available for living, temporary or permanent residents need to be more careful when purchasing. While this keeps coins in your pocket and items out of polluting landfills, it also helps you clear your mind with fewer things nearby to distract you.

It's clear why tiny homes are becoming a viable way of life for more and more people, especially as the technology they require – such as solar panels – becomes cheaper and far more accessible. Even households that are connected to the electric grid can see huge savings on solar panels through the Inflation Reduction Act.
