The Americana Trade Fair in Friedrichshafen is the largest trade fair in Europe for Western Riding and equestrian sports. At the center of the event is the show arena, a 36 MX 72 m large space for horse shows, competitions, demonstrations and programs for live and online target groups.
The light quality played a crucial role for the 2025 edition, which was held from September 3 to September 7th. As the official service partner of Messe Friedrichshafen, Organissimo worked with the clarification of the lighting of the arena and highlighted it with seventy Kl Panel XL LED Soft lights to ensure reliable, flexible performance in shipments.
Unique challenges
The light of the Americana Show Arena presented several unique challenges. The activities started six in the morning and lasted until midnight, with the rehearsals often extended until the early hours of the morning. This meant that the lighting system was carried out with almost constant use. The arena was also recorded on eight to nine cameras for programs and livestream that require natural and flicker lighting on the screen.
At the same time, the well -being of the horses was of the utmost importance. Conventional halogen lights had not only failed frequently, but also required changes with constant light bulb, but also projected dazzling light that the driver and animals could distract. Since the devices were mounted high on specialist works above the sensitive arena sand, there was no opportunity to maintain fast maintenance when something went wrong, so that reliability and performance were essential.
Kl Panel XL
The venue knew that they wanted to upgrade LED, and the solution was the Kl Panel XL from Elation, a powerful LED soft light that was known for its even light distribution, high performance and excellent color rendering. Organissimus assembled seventy units over three long specialist works that ran over the length of the hall together with additional specialist works to achieve complete coverage. The Martin Knauer from Organissimus chose the Kl -Panels for the Arena lighting and created the overall lighting design.
The Kl Panel XL easily adapts to the needs of live events, camera productions and large-scale shows, and its functions have proven to be decisive for Americana: its 544W RGBWLC LED array produces up to 44,000 lumens with a CRI of 95 to ensure a natural, high-quality color playback. With a color temperature range of 2,000 to 10,000 K and a flexible DMX control, the lights could quickly adapt to the light white laundry, which is required for horse competitions, up to smoothing pastel colors and softer tones for demonstrations and shows. The devices also include barndoors, which enabled the team to precisely steer the light and at the same time avoid unwanted spilling.
“Homogeneous and reliable lighting is of crucial importance for an arena of this size,” says Daniel Geiger, Managing Director of Organissimo. “The Kl Panel XL provided us with the perfect combination of performance, flexibility and energy efficiency. It was an ideal light for this type of show.” The KL-Lichter were integrated into the overall production by organissimo, which not only manages lighting, sound and video, but also supervised some constructions and supported them behind the scenes.
Quality in front of the camera
Organissimo worked with camera teams, which expressly demanded LED panel softlights, which would not project blinding light, but could cover the entire arena in a uniform laundry. The LED panels improved the video recording without distracting drivers or animals, while the RGBWLC engine provided the softer colors requested by the customer. The KL Panel XL develops for both live and shipment environments and ensures flicker-free performance through an LED update rate of 900 to 25,000 Hz and keeps almost silent.
The KL -PANEL XL units worked in connection with moving head devices and made it possible to combine organissimo to combine even soft laundry with dynamic spotlight for certain scenes and performance.
Express expectations
The results exceeded the expectations. For the first time, the Americana Arena could switch seamlessly between the sharp competitive lighting and the immersive colored scenes, which is so far impossible with the halogen system. Drivers, audience and online viewers benefited from improved visibility, natural colors and dynamic effects. The system was reliably carried out around the clock even at the proximity of the clock, and no errors were reported. “We were very excited, but also a bit nervous because we hadn't used this type of lights for a horse show,” commented Geiger, “but they played excellently.”
In all reports, Americana was a resounding success in 2025, which pulled more visitors than ever before and increased the quality of production to new heights.
