When it comes to Diwali, lighting often begins and ends with fairy lights and diyas, but there is so much more to explore. Creating a well-rounded, well-lit space requires strategy while maintaining the warmth and intimacy of festive fervor at the center of the lighting arrangement.
To achieve a cohesive lighting strategy, Anupriyam Arora, Design Lead, MagickHome, shared with HT Lifestyle four key hacks for this Diwali season. In his opinion, lighting goes beyond mere purpose as it is also about emotions. Emphasizing on the value of proper lighting design on Diwali, he said, “If walls are the heart of a house, then lighting is its heartbeat.” This also highlights that redesigning festive decorations is not just limited to painting walls, your lighting techniques also require your careful attention.
Here are the 4 lighting hacks Anupriyam suggested:
1. Layer lights

- Start with layers. A common mistake is relying on a single ceiling light.
- Instead, think about ambient, task and accent lighting.
- Ambient lighting provides the overall glow, task lighting helps you focus on areas like the kitchen or study, and accent lighting adds drama by highlighting art, textures or architectural details.
- Together, these layers make a space versatile and dynamic.
2. Avoid over-lighting

- A critical issue that is often overlooked is over-illumination.
- Too many lights or too bright light can create harsh shadows, glare, and visual clutter, which can make a room feel smaller or less comfortable.
- Effective lighting is always about balance – enough to illuminate and highlight, but carefully controlled to maintain warmth, depth and mood.
3. Add statement lights

- A statement chandelier can be the centerpiece of a dining room, while pendant lights add intimacy to a breakfast nook.
- Wall or floor lamps can add warmth and depth without a major renovation.
4. Increase natural light wherever possible

- Natural light is the most underrated design element.
- Play with sheer curtains, mirrors and reflective surfaces to enhance natural light – this will instantly make rooms feel larger and more inviting.
