SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah woman's love of quilting and indie pop star Benson Boone collided in a moment she described as “heartbreaking.” The singer captured her handmade vest and wore it on stage during a recent concert.
Chelsea Porter, a local quilter and fan of Boone's, attended his show in Salt Lake City with a sign that read “You Dropped This” and pointed to a quilted vest she had handmade especially for the artist.
“You like, softball threw this beautiful quilted vest,” host Brooke Walker said during a follow-up interview.
Porter confirmed: “I literally passed out, but it just landed. It didn't have to go far, it just… boom.”
The vest was a mix of traditional quilting and Boone's eclectic style.
“I wanted that traditional feel, but I also wanted the funkiness and versatility that he brings,” Porter explained.
She added some unique details, like a ruffled collar with musical notes and Boone's name, to make it “less grandma and more pop.”
Porter's creation and viral moment have earned her widespread recognition in both the quilting and Benson Boone communities.
“I was just so loved and supported,” she said. “The quilters say, 'I don't know who Benson Boone is, but I'm his fan.'”
Moving forward, Porter said she would like to create something for Drew Barrymore.
“I literally applied to be on the Drew Barrymore show,” she said. “I’d like to do something for Drew Barrymore.”
