The Furniture Mission puts the finishing touches on new rooms

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — A local nonprofit that helps families turn a house into a home is completing a major move of its own.

A month after closing the doors of its previous Sioux Falls location, Furniture Mission is putting the finishing touches on its new space.

“We are officially here at an address at 800 South Van Eps, and this is our new home,” said Janean Michalov, executive director of the Furniture Mission of South Dakota.

General manager Janean Michalov says the move of thousands of pieces of furniture and household items went as expected.

“It didn't happen without the great support of the community. We had between 30 and 40 and sometimes even 50 people here in a day, which made this transition extremely smooth,” Michalov said.

The new space is twice the size of Furniture Missions' two previous locations combined, and that's not the end of the improvements.

“We're super organized and have some shiny new things we've never had before, like the use of a forklift and the pallet racks you see behind me. These things make us all more efficient, but also help us serve more and in a more timely manner,” Michalov said.

“This space is amazing. It gives us everything and probably more than we ever imagined,” said Treasurer Paul Hollister.

Treasurer Paul Hollister says the new location also opens doors behind the scenes.

“We'll be able to get more volunteers, we'll be able to do the mentoring that we've been talking about, and we really want to push the larger spaces like the wood shop and the sewing room, which will in turn lead to more mentoring,” Hollister said.

The Furniture Mission will begin accepting furniture donations next Wednesday and is now accepting new referrals.

“We expect a small delay in receiving these recommendations because they were closed for 30 days. So we expect to start serving our customers at the end of next week, the beginning of the week after that, so probably around November 18th,” Michalov said.

The Furniture Mission served a record number of households last year, surpassing the 2,000 mark for the first time in its history. You can support the cause by making a donation or volunteering your time.
