After moving to Surrey from the 1940s during the pandemic, a couple were waiting for the restrictions to be lifted and then planned and carried out a series of renovation work on the rooms on the ground floor, including their home office.
Who lives here?
Nicky Ramley-Clarke, a freelance interi-editor and journalist, lives together with his husband John and Springer Spaniel India in their renovated house in Surrey in the 1940s.
Before
“Everything was boring and beige from ground to ceiling and urgently needed TLC,” says Nicky. “The built -in desk limited, and the dark carpet let the room ruddle.”
What had to change?
NRC: When we moved to this house during the pandemic, it was our priority to create a home office. The previous owners had installed an integrated desk with adjacent memory, which we removed to give ourselves more versatility in the future, although we now regret that it was an excellent quality. We also removed the carpet and painted all the surfaces. Since it is a compact space, we have focused on maximizing the room and making the southern light optimal out of the only window.
How did you get the project?
NRC: During the Lockdown we drove ourselves out with a good tidying up and used the room as it was. As soon as the restrictions were lifted, we renovated the room together with other rooms on the ground floor. The most important changes were to remove the built -in furniture and install new floors. Although we did not differentiate DIY, this went beyond our skills and we have hired professionals.
Where did the inspiration come from?
NRC: Our goal was to create a decadent mad Men-Stil room -Tags over productive and relaxing in the evening. We chose Blue because of the cocoon effect, supplemented by a dark wooden floor with a shiny finish, which created American aesthetics, and added a sideboard with marble with crystal canters for post-work drinks. White accents make everything a pop, and the crystal candlestick from my house in childhood gives a touch of glamor.
Any major investments?
NRC: Reliable Wi-Fi is of crucial importance for our two jobs. That is why we have invested in an Orbi from Netgear, a robust system that guarantees quick and reliable coverage. We are satisfied with his performance, especially in the country.
Were there any challenges on the way?
NRC: Yes – maximize the room with our furniture where we are still working on. We have reorganized the desk several times for a new perspective.
How do you feel in your home office?
NRC: Quiet, productive and creative – a profitable combination that helps to avoid the block of the writer. The room remains cool in summer and comfortably in winter, and the chair is so comfortable that I sometimes burn the midnight oil without realizing it.
