White kitchen with white cupboards before the renovation

Danielle Kelling (@Daniknyc711) has lived in her apartment in Brooklyn for 12 years and has led her through several design phases over time. A room that has experienced some serious changes is the kitchen. It was last updated in 2003 and Danielle describes the original space as “cold, depressing, monotonous and unseasant”. Huch!

There were some elements of the original cuisine, which Danielle estimated, such as the high ceilings and the spacious worktops and storage rooms. However, some characteristics had to be removed, including broken stove ventilation, the cabinet laminate and some other outdated aspects.

“I hated the flooring; It was a dark and dirty gray vinyl. The cabinet and wall color appeared institutionally on me and the ceiling lighting ensured that it looked even colder, ”she explains. “The cabinet fittings kept hanging on my fingers, which was annoying. Finally, I had a microwave on the worktop that took a lot of valuable space on the work surface, and it would be nice to find a microwave in the closet that also acts as oven ventilation and lighting. ”

Danielle began to modernize the kitchen in order to make it more functional and aesthetic. The first change was to remove the broken stove ventilation and replace it with a built-in LG studio microwave. Danielle and her friend revised the cabling and created a place for a socket.

The installation of the microwave itself was a tricky project; In retrospect, Danielle says that it would have been a better idea to hire a specialist, but this created urgently needed additional storage space. “It also made three different work areas possible while I had only two before,” she says. “I can now have two people cook in the kitchen without any problems.”

The kitchen also received a little more light because Danielle LED strip lighting installed under the cupboards in order to “counteract the cold neon light”.

However, the liveliness did not only come from the lighting bodies. Danielle also removed the peeling laminate from the cupboards and painted them in a deep red – after all, cherry red is the trend for 2025! The cupboards are in Incarnadine from Farrow & Ball and the walls are kept in Pink Ground from Farrow & Ball.

Do you remember the “dark gray vinyl floor” that Danielle loathes? She and her boyfriend exchanged it for a black and white pattern to remove and stick it out, which only took an hour or two. She says that the renewal of the soil alone was one of the “biggest changes” in the room.

The entire kitchen redesign only lasted two months and cost almost $ 1,000, says Danielle. All new colors and patterns perfectly complement your art collection, which you present over the cupboards. She added that most updates can be removed and the original condition can be returned if it decides to leave these rent (including the original devices and hardware).

“I now feel much more comfortable while cooking in my kitchen,” says Danielle. “I actually like to be in the room now and also work more productive.” If you want to see more of your beautiful apartment in Brooklyn, visit the full house tour on apartment therapy.
