Experts show how to optimize the hardscape, plantings and the layout of a garden as a beautiful defense
If climate change changes our environment, the fire season can – traditionally reached in spring and early autumn – to a daily condition. After all, around three winter months in 2025 municipalities in all of California, Texas, New Mexico, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Kansas, South Carolina, Missouri, Missouri, Maryland, Tennessee, Colorado and currently New York. Age energy infrastructure, invasive grasses and our tendency to develop land in fire -prone regions, literally give these flames fuel.
A recently carried out survey estimated that 84% of the fires that are currently tens of thousands of North Americans their houses – and all billions of taxpayers to support fire fighting costs from humans. This is not an exercise: the reality and the risk of fires must be taken seriously and the reduction from them can and should be part of the design practice. But how? Give your outdoor area a clean sweep
First reduce existing risks. “We have customers who are attracted from real estate in rural locations because they are beautifully set in nature,” says Mike Albert, director of Design Workshop in Aspen, Colorado. But this beauty is not always safe. “One of the most important steps in a landscape design is the removal of fire,” says Max Martin from Geoponika AD100, “especially by removing fire leaders – a dense vegetation that can carry flames in the direction of a structure.” For example, overgrown or dry shrubs can quickly burn together and transfer to neighboring trees. So a wooden deck can also be done. “It is important that you clarify the vegetation for the base of a deck,” says Albert. “You can imagine that real estate on hills where the fire comes up the hill is on fire and it goes up the deck directly.”
Therefore, the risk reduction is about the location. “[Plantings] The fire can be transferred very quickly if you are planted too close to structures, in large groups without breaks or without at least six foot between the bottom of the tree tub and the tip of the bushes underneath, ”explains Adam Kober, President and creative director of Newport Beach, California – based landscape study.” In addition, six buns should be switched off between big shrubs. ” Falling fire leaders, thinking critically about changing the existing landscape design or fulfilling new plantings.
