Easy Ways to Modernize Your Home

Easy Ways to Modernize Your Home

Rosie Romero special to the Arizona Daily Star

Q: Can you give me some ideas for easy upgrades to my home? I would like to do some updates without spending a lot of money!

A: Yes! A small change every now and then can give us the chance to consciously improve our surroundings. Here are five easy ways to give your home a modern feel.

Art

The artwork in our homes includes more than just the paintings on the walls. Many of us own sculptural pieces such as statues, vases, clocks and collectibles that have meaning. Knickknacks and small souvenirs that we like have value to us and can be presented with love (cleaning up is part of this process and we only keep the things that mean something to us).

By changing the display of all the items mentioned, you can refresh your living space inexpensively and quickly. Sometimes just moving artwork to a different wall or room and changing the grouping of the pieces is enough to provide the feeling of renewal you may be looking for. And don't be afraid to rotate items in and out. It doesn't have to be seen all at once.

Furniture

Think about rearranging the chairs, sofas and tables to give the room a different atmosphere. Of course, this is easier said than done. Due to the large number of cables, our entertainment systems are usually permanently installed, which can limit changes.

However, chairs and side tables and lamps may be able to be moved. Placing an electrical outlet on the floor or wall in a strategic location in the room may open up some opportunities for moving items.

Adding pops of color with new sofa cushions or throws or even adding small rugs will change the feel of the room.

Bookshelves are another way to enhance a home. Books can be viewed by size, color, or theme. Whichever option you choose, books add an interesting element to any home. One of the first things many people pay attention to in a home is the choice of books – it tells us a lot about the people who live there! Present your books attractively and thoughtfully.

window coverings

Curtains, blinds, and blinds allow you to control how natural light affects a room. They also offer a great way to add color and texture to a room. The texture comes from the material used for the window coverings you choose. The pleated patterns can enrich the design feeling of any room.

Light

The way we artificially light our homes has a huge impact on the atmosphere of a room.

Replacing light fixtures is an easy way to update the look of your home. If you already have the lights you want, you can also replace the lamp or bulbs. Switching from incandescent bulbs to LED bulbs can change lighting intensity; You may even be able to save a few shekels by using less electricity.

Getting rid of the remnants of the fluorescent lights could be the next step toward an update. Replacing them with recessed lights will make gathering spaces in your home feel warmer and more intimate.

Depending on the scope of the project you undertake, the return on investment will be worth it. If you are not a trained electrician, consider hiring one.

Paint

Painting is all about color. Lighter colors can make a small room appear larger. Conversely, darker colors can make a large room appear smaller.

Changing the color of a room will certainly change its atmosphere. Admittedly, painting one or more rooms isn't as easy as changing a light bulb, but it will make a difference.

A current trend in painting our homes that can save you time is adding an accent wall. Typically complementary to the main color, an accent wall can be used to highlight artwork, provide a view, or even identify another use in a large, open space. For example, a friend of mine has a large, amazing room with an entertainment center, a seating and conversation area, and a pool table. Using some well thought out placements with different colors really adds a lot to the multi-purpose space.

Painting can be a DIY project and you don't even have to paint the entire room. You could choose to add an accent wall and simply paint it. Easy as pie! A DIY article in our database might help you decide if you want to do it yourself.

There are many creative and simple measures we can take to easily upgrade our living spaces. We just looked at a few of them this week. What we'd like to hear are the simple upgrades you've made. Write us a message at info@rosieonthehouse.com and thank you!
