Freeway -upgrade designs open to community feedback

The locals were encouraged to give feedback on newly published designs for the next stage of the upgrades of the East Autobahn from the Tram Road to the Springvale Road.

The urban design and landscape plan reacts to almost three years of community counseling and more than 15,000 feedback parts that were obtained from the project's planning phase.

An improved lane layout between the tram and Middleborough streets is easier for the drivers to use and return more space for trees and plants than the initial Environmental effects statement (EES) Design.

Travel speeds, which can be up to 45 km/h through this section of the highway on the peak, are now increasing to more than 85 km/h and up to 100 km/h in the Auspeak.

The plan also includes more than 1.6 kilometers of improvements for the Koonung Creek Trail, the bridges and the underpass, including two new bridges to the Eram Park in Box Hill North.

In Blackburn North and Nunawading, the eastern highway is lowered to keep existing bridges in the Koonung Road and in the Cabea Street in order to offer better connections to Koonung Creek Trail.

Open Space is also improved with over 2,000 trees and 1 million plants to improve existing areas of the Koonung Creek and Trail as well as the return areas of the Eram Park and the Junction Road Reserve that are required to support the construction.

4.7 km of lamening -reducing asphalt are used to better manage tire noises on the source and keep existing noise walls. The reduction in construction interruptions for the residents and the storage of more existing trees. 3.5 km of new noise walls are being built if existing walls have to be replaced.

The upgrades from the Tram Road to Springvale Road are the next level in a large overhaul of the Eastern Freeway Cycle times to shorten and connect Melbournes East to the new North East Link and improved M80 Ring Road in Greensborough.

After completing the projects, the projects save 35 minutes on a trip between the north and east of Melbourne and take 15,000 trucks a day on the local roads.

The Urban Design and Landscape Plan for the upgrades of the East Autobahn from the Tram Road to Springvale Road is on Sunday, September 28, 2025. For more information, see a visit Engage.vic.gov.au/Bigbuild.

Designs for the remaining stage of the eastern motorway upgrades from Hoddle Street to Burke Road will be exhibited for a comment later this year.
