A nursing home in Knebworth recently took part in a newly launched environmental initiative in which local school children and residents were brought together with green finger activities.

Care Uks Knebworth Care Home in London Road recently invited children from Knebworth Primary & Nurery School to join the residents when they took part in generations of changes, an intergenerational initiative to combine older and younger people in a common mission of environmental administration.

The new program “New Care UK Generations of Change” aims to use the wisdom of older members of society and the new perspectives of children during practical activities in connection with biological diversity, climate change and sustainable gardening and to create opportunities for a fulfilling exchange of knowledge that will go to the planet.

In order to do them, the inhabitants of Knebworth worked with the young people to create sustainable bird boxes made of wood recovered, which were donated by the local workshop men's sheds from the local community workshops. The day started with the fact that the group worked next to each other to assemble the bird boxes before painting them in a row of living colors that are ready to hang in the garden to provide food for local birds.

The 86-year-old Derek Young said: “It was nice to welcome the children in Knebworth. We had many fun moments that were enjoyed by both the children and me. It is important to supply the birds and bees a safe space so that they can enjoy the fresh air.”

In accordance with school curricula, this will be the first of many generations of change projects at Knebworth and bring a unique bidirectional learning model to the house that enables the residents to look after children through traditional nature conservation practices, while children share modern perspectives on sustainable life during their common environmental projects.

Apart from the environmental education, this initiative aims to combat the loneliness of older people by promoting meaningful connections that promote a purpose and enrich the life of both generations if they work together to form a more sustainable future.

Care UK has also created downloadable packages with resources for teachers and groups, including funny, interactive activities to facilitate the lessons between the generations, with the educational packages cover topics from biological diversity to sustainability from food, climate change and recycling.

Daniel Grab, Home Manager at Knebworth, said: “We were thrilled to see the children and residents so that they create the bird boxes and the absolute joy of their faces when they worked together to do their part for the planet.

“The generations of the change initiative enable residents and children to learn from each other and to share knowledge in a fulfilling way – and it is great to see that it is brought to life. We can hardly wait to welcome more feathered friends in the gardens, and we would like to thank Knebworth Primary & Nurry School for the connection of our mission!”

In 2024, Care UK secured the official accreditation for the high standards with which the greenhouse gas emissions of companies were measured, an important milestone in reducing CO2 emissions and reaching Net zero until 2040. Care UK continues to work on at least one sustainability champion in each of its 160+ homes and changes, which the ESG values and the release of the organization and the community and the community of the organization and the community and the community and the community of the organization and the community and the community and the community of the organization and the community and the community and the community and the community and community and community and the community and the ESG values and the community and community and community and community and the community and community.
