Job advertisement for scientist: modeling and optimization of heating and cooling networks

What will your role be?

introduction
The energy transition is progressing very quickly. This requires a transformation of the current energy infrastructure and a faster deployment of novel and sustainable energy systems such as heating and cooling networks. We hold a global leading position in the holistic design and optimization of operating strategies for heating and cooling networks. In the Netherlands, many municipalities are in the early design phase of their heat transition, where our expertise will help them take further steps.

  • Our modeling activities on the topic of heating networks will be expanded in various directions in the coming years;
  • Inclusion of combined heating and cooling generation (5GDHC) in networks;
  • Greater integration of heat and electricity networks;
  • Phased or rollout optimization of heating and cooling networks;
  • Continuous expansion of the algorithms to other goods.

The role
You will work on projects from our team, which specializes in the modeling and optimization of heating and cooling networks.

  • Determine the problem definition/description and its implementation in a model.
  • Participate in the development of the optimization backend code.
  • Interact with customers to discuss their needs, the input data required and the approach to take.
  • Use our open source working platforms for system integration and system design, such as the Design Toolkit, where we develop together with many parties from the energy value chain.
  • Analyze the results of the optimized systems and the linearization methods considered and report the results of the system design optimization and present them to stakeholders.

What we expect from you

  • Master's degree in mechanical engineering, systems and controls, applied physics, applied mathematics or similar;
  • Background in optimization, preferably knowledge of MILP concepts (Mixed Integer Linear Problem);
  • Python programming skills and code version control;
  • Affinity for modeling energy systems and in particular for physical (heat) network systems and markets;
  • Analytically strong, able to grasp complex mathematical problems and translate them into high quality software code;
  • A good communicator with customers;
  • Familiarity with the Dutch language is a prerequisite;
