You'll be hard-pressed to see a classic home decor trend making a comeback, especially around the holidays. Instead, we often welcome it with open arms and a box full of perfectly themed items from the attic – because no, we never actually threw it away.
This year, the biggest holiday decorating trend harkens back to the traditional holidays of decades past, and every Southern grandma once mastered it (and probably still masters it). Everyone is celebrating a “Ralph Lauren Christmas” and we’re there for every plaid moment.
What is “Ralph Lauren Christmas” and why is the style back?
While the name may seem specific, this aesthetic has been around for a long time, even for those who aren't as familiar with the classic brand. Essentially, it focuses on a traditional holiday look – featuring tartan, bow ties and a color scheme of deep red and forest green – with the same sophisticated American flair that the Ralph Lauren brand has always been known for.
The rise of this trend for the 2025 holiday season appears to be in line with this year's overall trend of bringing back classic and retro themes for hosting and decorations, from winter fondue parties to cozy plaid Christmases.

How to get the Ralph Lauren Christmas look
The goal is to make your Christmas decorations feel more classic, homey and a little sophisticated. Chances are good that you recognize many of the elements from your grandmother's decor or even already have some of the items at home.
Lights in warm tones
This calls for warm white, twinkling lights, both on your tree and in other areas of the house. Placing Christmas candles in your windows brings an old-fashioned feel. For those who prefer colorful Christmas tree lights, this one may not be for you.
Tartan and plaid
These classic patterns are perfect for this comeback trend, and the focus on bold holiday colors like burgundy and deep forest green will make every corner feel cozy. You can look for a new blanket, towels and serving pieces with a traditional print.

Tapered candles
There's no traditional Christmas table setting without a bevy of romantic taper candles to provide warm light at night and elegant flair during the day.
Arches
While bows alone were a big holiday decorating trend last year, luckily you can use them again for the Ralph Lauren Christmas look. Red velvet bows fit wonderfully into the overall picture and always look good on the mantel, on the stairs, on the garland or even tied to the tree.
Keep it classic yet festive and lush and you'll be hard-pressed to go wrong.
