Discover the inspiring story behind Meeting of the Minds, a modern waterfront home that offers the perfect blend of contemporary design and timeless elegance.
NAlong the tranquil shores of Lido Isle in Newport Beach you'll find a contemporary masterpiece that seems to defy the definition of a beach house. The 3,198 square foot home is aptly named “Meeting of the Minds” and is the result of a harmonious partnership between the homeowner, renowned architect Eric Aust, Sailhouse and the talented team at Morrison Interiors.

From the start, the homeowners' vision was clear: a modern beach house that would be a direct contrast to their primary residence in Chicago. Denise Morrison, founder and principal designer of Morrison Interiors, and Rachel Morrison, vice president, enthusiastically took on this challenge.
“It was a great collaboration that started with some interesting inspiration images that we shared that showed a direction that we thought would work well for interior design,” Denise recalls. Through collaborative discussions and exploring different ideas, the team successfully developed a design direction that aligned with the client's vision and got to work on their second home.

The exterior of the house is an impressive mix of modern and traditional elements. The architect's choice of hammered blue Gascony limestone and gray-tinted cedar cladding creates a fascinating interplay of texture and color. Inside, the design team echoed these elements with linear detailing on the cabinets, small reveals in waterfall panels, and blackened metal accents. The builder executed the design elements so that the exterior and interior appear completely connected.

One of the outstanding features of the house is the innovative use of space. “We were able to create a beautiful desk and storage space that easily converts into a queen-size murphy bed if they need extra space for guests,” explains Denise. “Obscuring functionality was a challenge, but we are very pleased with the results.”
Another unique space is the living room on the other side of the master suite, which can be reconfigured as needed to provide versatility for the homeowner's changing needs. “This space went through many uses: an exercise room, a play area for future grandchildren, a reading room, etc.,” notes Rachel. As a result, we designed a multifunctional space that can adapt to customers’ needs as their needs change over time.”

In contrast to the home's modern architectural lines, Rachel also points out that the master bedroom offers a tranquil retreat with warm wood paneling and cozy furnishings. This departure from contemporary design highlights the homeowner's desire for comfort, creating a space that perfectly balances relaxation and sophisticated coastal living.
Another highlight of the residence was the thoughtfully designed wine room, which provides a stylish and practical space for the homeowner's extensive wine collection. “It was particularly gratifying to find a space that would house her collection beautifully and functionally,” says Denise.

The outside areas of the house are equally impressive. The rear patio features a unique floating pedestal deck system that ensures a level surface while allowing for drainage.
There is also an impressive use of glass, metal and stone that connects the house to the water. The glass railing provides unobstructed views of the bay, while the stone complements the flagstones used on the front and sides of the house.

“Since the house borders the water, we wanted the railing system to appear open. “The glass allows for a seamless connection to the water behind it,” says Rachel. “And where it connects to the homeowner’s deck, a wood component comes into play that blends well with the home’s cedar siding.”
Although the home's design is undeniably modern, the Morrison Interiors team has taken care to infuse it with warmth and comfort. “We achieved this by layering textured fabrics, comfortable and soft upholstery, and incorporating interesting artwork and accessories,” notes Denise. “The combination of these elements in a modern shell makes this home inviting.”
