Traffic signals that are to be removed as part of the optimization plan in the city center of Street
Mobile, Ala. The Working to remove traffic signals from SELECT Downtown Intersections begin on Monday, August 11th, as part of a multi-year optimization effort for roads to make the city center more secure and efficient for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.
The city of Mobile leads this project, which was created from a comprehensive plan of the Downtown Mobile Alliance with the renowned city planner Jeff Speck. During his visit, Speck met with companies in the city center and important stakeholders to improve the functionality and accessibility of the area.
The resulting strategy emphasized the creation of a walk -in, efficient and safer city center for everyone – regardless of whether they are on foot, by bike or in a vehicle. The efforts of $ 1.1 million will be removed 26 traffic signals from low-volume crossings in the city center next week.
At most of these locations, the signals are replaced by Vierway stops to improve the flow of traffic and increase the safety of pedestrians. The project will also improve the security and access of pedestrians by installing new ADA ramps and reversing zebra crossings.
All 26 of the traffic signals planned for removal will flash red on Wednesday morning and continue to do 90 days. During this transition period, there are time drivers and pedestrians to adapt to the new all-way stop, and enables traffic engineers to observe driver behavior.
The work to implement the optimization plan in the city center of Street takes place in phases in order to minimize disorders for companies in the city center and public events. The project is expected to be fully completed in spring 2026.
The drivers are asked to do caution in areas where the construction is underway. Further updates and traffic lawyers are provided throughout the project on Cityofmobile.org
